By Matt Crandall – Midwest Mixtape Saxophonist

When I am talking to brides and grooms and event planners, the first question I ask is, “Tell me about the vision for your special day!” As the conversation continues, the first question couples ask me is, “Tell me how it works you performing with our DJ…” Admittedly, Saxophone + beat-creator/mix-master/emcee can be hard to conceptualize—how will it work?! I answer with my custom, 2-layered approach to vibing with DJs:

Step 1 – I always connect with a DJ before the wedding to introduce myself and game plan. I assure them that they are in charge of the dance floor, the vibe, and to keep the party going. My job is to help bring live music energy and fun to the party! My background, including 2 college degrees, is in jazz improvisation which is rooted in creating new music on top of pre-existing chords and melodies—a perfect fit for
performing at weddings! I let the DJ know that I am comfortable playing to whatever music they feel like fits the crowd.

Step 2 – I tell DJs (and wedding couples) that over the years of performing, I have developed a playlist of nearly 100 songs that work well with the DJ + Sax combination. If a DJ is prepping songs and wondering how to include me, here are 100 ways this can happen easily. My song list includes EDM, RnB, Pop, Rap and even Country, from the last 60 years.

This added step of intentionality gives everyone an extra boost of confidence for the day – letting DJs know I understand their job and can give them easy energy boosts throughout the evening, giving me confidence the DJ has ways to utilize my saxophone 100% effectively, and letting couples know that I understand my role in connecting with a DJ to bring the Party!

If you’re considering booking a saxophonist for your wedding or event – do it! You’ll be so glad you did 😄 🎷 🥂
